Hero

I watched a film called Hero on Saturday. It's not The Hero with Dustin Hoffman. It's a Chinese film by director Zhang Yi Mou. The story is interesting: it's not the usual linear plot and not even just flashback. That reminded me of films like 'Sliding Doors' and 'Run Lola Run'.

The film itself has nothing to do with those. It's a typical Chinese martial arts drama, starring Jet Li, and Zhang Ziyi, the beautiful actress in "Crouching Tiger...". Once more, what is really striking is the photography, by Christopher Doyle. You could almost pause through the entire film and each picture would a be an awe-inspiring photograph. And that is really the reason why it's worth watching. The play with colours distinctly reminded me of when we were children and wanted everything to be blue one day and red the next. It's a real stroll through the whole colour spectrum.

I found Ang Lee's "Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon" more moving and more subtle by far, but both films equal each other in colour and pictures. It'll come out on widescreen soon, so go see it.
