This will be Mauritius' Games of hope to reach an Olympic final for the first time ever. Stephan Buckland, born and bred in Mauritius is world number 1 as at 9 August 2004 in his discipline, the 200m, according to the International Association of Athletics Federations ratings. He is the 5th fastest man on his distance in 2004. So of course, all eyes are on him. He missed the final by two places at the Sydney Olympics, but he still had to reach his best then. Buckland used to train in Senegal, but for the past year has been training in Mauritius.
And in 400m, Eric Milazar, who is Mauritian but comes from the even tinier island of rodrigues (Mauritian district north-east of the island) is ranked 4th worldwide. His times have not been as good this year, but his determination is here.
So, are we hoping to be there? You bet the island (and the bits of it scattered across the world) is.
We have seven other participants who'll be trying to improve their personal bests during these Olympics.
